Cantina Puiatti, a leading figure in the Friulian winemaking and viticulture world since 1967, offers harmonious wines that combine an extraordinary innovative spirit with consistency and respect for its terroir. Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo Caprai and brought to its peak by the vision of his son Marco Caprai, the company had the historical merit of recovering Sagrantino di Montefalco, a grape variety that was about to be lost and forgotten, through unprecedented scientific research on clonal selection. The technical challenge was titanic: Sagrantino has the highest polyphenolic content in the world, but Caprai, thanks to the skillful use of barrique and new winemaking techniques, transforms that “hardness” into a silky structure, capable of defying the decades. In 1993, Sagrantino 25 Anni was born: it is not just a wine, it is a manifesto, which with its international scores and disruptive elegance demonstrates how this wine can be registered among the great international reds. Thus, thanks to the vision of Marco Caprai, also a pioneer of integrated sustainability, Montefalco goes from a rural village to the world capital of wine tourism. Marco Caprai confirms his role as President & CEO of Arnaldo Caprai. The operation was overseen by Paolo Pietrostefani of Pietrostefani Corporate, Alberto Calvi Coenzo of Avvocatidiimpresa and Alberto Bezzetto of CDR Advisory.

Vino, Angelini Wine & Estates acquires majority stake in Arnaldo Caprai winery – Corriere dell’Umbria

Arnaldo Caprai-founded in 1971 and capable of rediscovering the Sagrantino di Montefalco-is embarking on a new era: the Angelini Wines & Estates group, led for two years by CEO Alberto Lusini, formerly of Ferrari Spumanti, has acquired a majority stake in the historic Umbrian company. With this alliance, Angelini Wines & Estates “strengthens its positioning in the premium-luxury sector, adding a recognized and distinctive brand to its portfolio” reads the official statement of the group built, over time, around brands of excellence in Italian wine. E’ in fact made up of six cellars, for a total of 1,700 hectares of land, of which 460 are vineyards, and produces a total of approximately 4 million bottles a year. Among the group’s groups, Bertani (named Cantina of the Year 2023 by Gambero Rosso and Tre bicchieri several times as well as a reference for the Amarone della Valpolicella), Val di Suga (protagonist with Brunello di Montalcino) and Cantina Puiatti (Friuli) stand out. The transaction-led by Paolo Pietrostefani of Pietrostefani Corporate, Alberto Calvi Coenzo of Avvocatidiimpresa, and Alberto Bezzetto of CDR Advisory-is estimated at over €20 million. Angelini Wine & Estates acquired a 49% stake in Arnaldo Caprai from the logistics group headed by Gabriele Volpi, who, through his financial vehicle Romeo and Juliet, acquired it five years ago” and then acquired the shares held by that part of the family not involved in the wine business. Marco Caprai, son of founder Arnaldo (who passed away in early January), who reportedly increased his stake to 35%, will be an ambassador for the new direction, retaining his role as president and CEO for what has been called “a strategic partnership that will guarantee a great future for the company and the entire Sagrantino di Montefalco area.” Founded 55 years ago by Arnaldo Caprai and brought to its peak by the vision of his son Marco, the Umbrian company had the historic merit of recovering Sagrantino di Montefalco, a grape variety that was about to be lost and forgotten, through unprecedented scientific research on clonal selection. The technical challenge was titanic: Sagrantino possesses the highest polyphenolic charge in the world, but Caprai, thanks to the skillful use of barrique and new winemaking techniques, transformed that hardness into a silky structure, capable of defying the decades. In 1993, with Sagrantino 25 Anni, this wine entered the pantheon of great international reds with Montefalco going from a rural village to the world capital of wine tourism. “We have chosen Angelini Wines & Estates as our partner to tackle a new phase of development,” comments Marco Caprai, already awarded the Italian Republic’s Honor of Merit for Ethical Entrepreneurship by President Sergio Mattarella, for his commitment to Caritas Foligno in enabling over 200 asylum seekers to find employment in the winery. For the same reason, UNHCR for Italy (the UN Refugee Agency), the Holy See, and San Marino awarded the winery the Welcome Working for Refugee Integration Award. This family-based partnership aims to create even greater value and excellence both for our winery and for the entire Montefalco area: I have always been convinced that a business, especially an agricultural one, and even more so a wine business, must be an integral and active part of the area, also a key player in its social sustainability. With Alberto Lusini and Sergio Marullo di Condojanni, we share a long-term vision, based precisely on this: on quality, on the territory, and on a 360-degree sustainable approach-not only environmental, but also social and economic. We will continue to lead the company, keeping intact the values that have brought us here and working on the ambitious projects we have for the future,” Caprai continues. Now a new page for a company that is now iconic and among the most important in Umbria and Italy.
